Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month

Ultrasound scanning, or sonography, is a noninvasive, safe and comfortable diagnostic procedure. Most people think of ultrasound as the technology used to confirm pregnancy or to monitor the health and growth of a fetus inside a woman’s body. Yet this versatile technology also serves as an invaluable tool to screen for and even aid in the treatment of certain diseases and medical conditions.

Do you need an ultrasound?

Your doctor may recommend an ultrasound to assess organ damage after an illness or infection. The presence of pain or swelling could also indicate the need for an ultrasound exam to determine the location and size of a tumor or mass, and to assess the health and function of organs such as:

  • Heart, blood vessels and abdominal aorta
  • Veins and arteries, liver, gallbladder and spleen
  • Pancreas
  • Kidneys
  • Bladder
  • Uterus, ovaries and fetus
  • Thyroid and parathyroid glands
  • Scrotum (testicles)
  • Brain, hips or spine in infants

The advanced capabilities of ultrasound technology are only heightened by the skills and expertise of the sonographer. The registered diagnostic medical sonographers at Alaska Family Sonogram possess the skills, experience and credentials to execute technically accurate exams and readings.

We conduct every procedure with compassion, understanding and empathy. And we take great care in communicating clearly, so you can be confident you are receiving the most accurate diagnosis in order to proceed with the most effective care.
